The first independent polls taken from among labor party members after end of the membership drive confirm that she is at this time the leading contender for the position of chairman of the Labor party. On September 22, 2011, Yachimovich was elected leader of the Labor Party in a run-off against PeretzIn the primary elections for chairman held on September 12th Yachimovich came in first among the 4 remaining contenders and beat Amir Peretz by a slim margin, 32% to 31% with Itzhak Herzog garnering 25% and Amram Mitzna 12% of the votes, respectively. Since the Labor party constitution requires a minimum of 40% of the votes for a first round decision, a run-off was held on September 21st resulting in a 54% to 46% victory (a margin of slightly more than 3500 votes) against Peretz.
