Demonstration in Helsinki
Jolla unveiled Sailfish OS and its first device (prototype) at Slush, an event for start-ups, by Marc Dillon and the Jolla crew on the 21st of November in Helsinki, Finland. The presentation was streamed live worldwide via the Jolla.com website which was also launched that day. The Sailfish UI was presented on the 21st, and the Sailfish SDK was presented on the 22nd
..

The Sailfish user interface, Sailfish operating system and Sailfish software development kit were all launched at Slush. Sailfish OS is the first fully MeeGo-based mobile OS, as MeeGo/Harmattan (used on the Nokia N9) was a fusion of MeeGo and Maemo.

The ecosystem has been declared to be "open ecosystem where everybody can contribute" with strategy for different devices, different UIs, different devices, different standards and different technologies, different business models and different partnerships.
The Sailfish OS SDK has been announced. The Sailfish OS details info are accessible via https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Main_Page.

The Sailfish OS SDK use Qt with virtual box for development, compiling and emulation purposes. It supports many systems like Android, Linux, iOS or Windows. The open source nature of SDK allow to shape and rebuild it for particular and specific needs of a company or an organisation or a group of developers, what allow to create context specific environment.

Peter Oaklander, Senior Vice President for Sales & Marketing of ST- Ericsson said: "We are pleased to add Sailfish OS to the mobile operating systems supported on our NovaThor ModAp
platforms. Supporting Sailfish from its inception shows how flexibly ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor platforms can adapt to different mobile OS’es and we look forward to seeing Sailfish powered devices in the market"

The significant part of presentation was devoted to China, which was the only one country mentioned, however Jolla operates worldwide. For Jolla strategy China is the core opportunity as a cyberport for development innovations and a marketplace.

During the presentation Jolla's sailfish smartphones were declared to be sold not only with Jolla brand. But Jolla phones are to be offered to retailers, to operators and to other smartphone vendors to be sold under partner's brand. This will allow to use partner's existing customer base.

Ubuntu, Sailfish and Plasma Active cooperation for sharing common APIs
Teams of Canonical Ltd., Jolla and KDE are talking about using common Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in their work on user interface (UI) design.

Sailfish and Plasma Active workspace use Qt 5′s QML – a JavaScript-based language for the design of UI applications. The resulting interface elements are similar, but are not currently compatible with each other.

This can lead to the situation when a single app could work and look native on both Ubuntu and Sailfish mobile operating systems, as well as Linux distributions using Plasma Active. This would attract more developers to the platforms and support the ecosystem, resulting in more apps and better effects for developers due to bigger markets.

On 2013-02-18 the China Express company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the China Fortune Holdings Limited (formerly known as Fortune Telecom Holdings), has taken 11,944 of Jolla shares for €1,000,310 (equivalent to HK$10,376,136). The share purchase is to be completed by March 8. Acquired shares represent approximately 6.25% of Jolla Oy’s enlarged share capital after a series of Jolla Oy’s fund raising activities expected to be completed in March 2013

Terminology
The company's name means dinghy (a small agile boat) in Finnish. The word "Jolla" can also be recognized as an ironic joke about the "burning platform memo" of MeeGo which "absolutely accidentally has leaked" from Nokia CEO Stephen Elop in February 2011.
Following this convention above Jolla employees in duty are called "sailors".
