Further southeast, in Van, the Armenians resisted the Turkish army until April 2, 1918, but were eventually forced to evacuate it and withdraw to Persia. The Azerbaijani Tatars sided with the Ottoman Empire and seized the lines of communication, thus cutting off the [[Armenian National Council]]s in [[Baku]] and [[Erevan]] from the National Council in [[Tiflis]].

== Memorial to the battle ==
To commemorate the defenders of the battle a memorial was created during the 1970's in
