Shelly Yachimovich (שלי יחימוביץ, born 28 March 1960) is an Israeli politician who has served as a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party since 2006. Before entering politics, she worked as a journalist. Yachimovich was elected as leader of the Labour Party on September 22, 2011.
Biography
Studies and career as a journalist
Born in Kfar Saba in 1960 to Jewish immigrants from Poland, Yachimovich in 1985 graduated Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in behavioural science. While a student in Beersheba, she began a career in journalism as the southern correspondent for Al HaMishmar. She later became an anchor of various shows on Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) radio station Reshet Bet. As a journalist, she covered women's and social welfare issues, and strongly advocated the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from southern Lebanon.
In October 2000, following a dispute with IBA management, she left IBA radio and joined the commercial Channel 2 where she hosted an interview show. She was also featured as a social commentator on other news broadcasts, where she often criticized the concentration of wealth in the hands of the elite, as well as the links between money and political power. She also joined Israel Army Radio (Galei Tzahal) for a weekly segment.
Life in politics
On 29 November 2005, two weeks after Amir Peretz was voted chairman of the Labor Party, Yachimovich announced she was leaving journalism and entering politics. She ran in the Labor primaries and attained ninth place. She was voted to the 17th Knesset in the 2006 elections. She retained her seat in the 2009 elections, for which she was fifth on the Labor list. After Ehud Barak left the Labor Party to form Independence in January 2011, a poll found that Yachimovich was the most popular of the likely candidates for leadership of the Labor Party. On March 3rd 2011 Yachimovich declared her candidacy and engaged in an energetic effort to sign up new members to the party. By the time the membership drive ended on June 6th, 2011, Yachimovich according to estimates, had signed up more than 17,300 new members. The first independent polls taken from among labor party members after end of the membership drive confirm that she is at this time the leading contender for the position of chairman of the Labor party.
On September 22, 2011, Yachimovich was elected leader of the Labour Party in a run-off against Amir Peretz.
Depiction in Israeli popular culture
A parody of Yachimovich played by Tal Friedman, Helly, has been a regular feature of Eretz Nehederet, a popular satirical current affairs show in Israel. The parody focuses on her notoriously feminist leanings, condescending rhetoric, and extensive use of "Air quotes".
