Beats Electronics, LLC is a producer of audio products and equipment with their headquarters in Santa Monica, California. The company was founded by hip-hop/rap artist and entrepreneur Andre "Dr. Dre" Young and Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, and primarily produces products under the brand Beats by Dr. Dre.
Since its inception, its products have been primarily manufactured and developed in collaboration with consumer electronics company Monster Cable. The collaboration has led to financial success for both companiesemdashBeats headphones accounted for 93% of the monetary value of the headphones market in the year 2011.
In 2012, there have been numerous other artists, besides Dr Dre, who have started producing their own headphone lines. They include Ludacris and 50 Cent.
The company is currently majority owned by HTC Corporation. Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and Universal Music Group all own minority shares in Beats.
History
The company was founded in 2006, and debuted its first product, Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, at the beginning of 2009. Monster was granted exclusive rights under a 5 year-contract to manufacture and develop Beats-branded headphones. Monster's CEO Noel Lee insisted on producing headphonesemdashinstead of loudspeakers as its founders originally plannedemdashfeeling that "the new speaker is the headphone." With Monster handling production of the products, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre were now free to handle promoting the new line. Beats would primarily rely on celebrity endorsements, particularly by popular musicians, to help promote market the new line.
Beats also began to license its brand and audio technologies to other vendors. In 2011, HP began to offer personal computers (such as Envy laptops and its all-in-one TouchSmart desktops) equipped with Beats Audio systems, which feature an advanced software equalizer with a preset optimized for higher quality sound output. Beats also partnered with Chrysler, incorporating a 10-speaker Beats by Dr. Dre sound system in its 2012 Chrysler 300S luxury automobile.
In August 2011, mobile phone manufacturer HTC acquired a 51% majority share in Beats for $300 million. On January 12, 2012, Business Week reported that Beats and Monster would not renew their production contract and would be ending their partnership by the end of 2012.
In March 2012, reports surfaced that Beats was planning to acquire the online music service MOG.

There are six versions of the headphones which are manufactured and distributed by Monster Cable Products. There are the Studio headphones, an over-ear headphone which are for the Studio musicians and often appear in music videos like Keri Hilson's Knock You Down and Lady Gaga's Poker Face. There are also the Tour headphones, canalphones for people on the go and appear in the videos for Lady Gaga's LoveGame & LMFAO's I'm in Miami Bitch. There are also the Beats Solo's which are on-ear headphones, they appear in Eminem's video You Don't Know (Eminem song).
The Beats Solo HD, a high-definition on-ear headphone, which is available in red & black, the red ones are made especially for Bono's Product RED charity group, & Pro, an over-ear DJ headphone which is available is black & white. The very newest member to the Beats Family are the MIXRS created by Dr Dre and DJ David Guetta. They are similar to the Pros and the Solos as they have a slimline form and can fold like a Pro.
There are also two branches of the Beats family. In-ear headphones i.e. Tour, Heartbeats By Lady Gaga & DiddyBeats by P. Diddy, the other being on-ear/over-ear i.e. Studio, Solo/Solo HD/Solo HD (RED), and Pro.
Beats also partnered with HP to launch notebook computers with high-end audio capabilities [2].
The range relies on advertisements placed in music videos and celebrity appearances, along with prime floor space in several Best Buy stores, called "Club Beats". Patrons of the brand include Lady GaGa and Esmee Denters. They are now one of the most prominent designs in the music industry, and the red "B" logo features heavily on the units and their packaging. A few sets of Beats headphones are featured in the music video for Imma Be by The Black Eyed Peas.
