2012}}</ref> (internationally Jolla Ltd., commonly called Jolla Mobile in many

sources) is an independent Finland-based designer, developer and seller of smartphones.

Jolla is developing an operating system for various mobile device

s called Sailfish OS.

Sailfish is based on the core distribution of the Mer

project, which continues the previous

work of the MeeGo

project.

Jolla continues the work started by Nokia that produced the Nokia N9 with the

MeeGo version Harmattan. After Nokia abandoned their participation

in the MeeGo project in favour of Windows Phone, the directors and core professionals from

Nokia's N9 team left the company and formed Jolla, to bring a successor to MeeGo back to the

mainstream market.

History
Jolla was started by Sami Pienimäki, Jussi Hurmola, Marc Dillon, Stefano Mosconi, ex-Nokia

employees and Antti Saarnio, as a company to continue MeeGo smartphone development. For this

purpose, an existing company entity (formed in March 2011) was used and renamed to Jolla in

October 2011. The original MeeGo Linux was established as a merging of Nokia's Maemo and

Intel's Moblin, both Linux systems. Since Nokia decided to cease participation in the

MeeGo project, Samsung has effectively replaced Nokia as the handset partner, creating a new

collaborative project called Tizen. Both MeeGo and Tizen are hosted by Linux Foundation.

However, MeeGo was forked by the community of developers who formed the independent [[Mer

(operating system)|Mer project]] to reconstruct MeeGo's aims and meritocratic

governance. Their work was continued so as to not lose previously accumulated efforts of MeeGo

development. Once the largest employer in the market, Nokia has scaled back and attempted to cut

costs. Many employees have either been made redundant or left the company. Nokia's Bridge

program was established to select, support and establish new start-up companies led by former

Nokia employees to help them earn a living and try to mitigate some of the bad PR Nokia was

suffering. As Jolla's OS is based on the

Meego API it was natural to use the core OS from the Mer project to develop their own system.

Within the Bridge program, Nokia and Jolla's leaders have had open discussion about the Jolla's

plans, and CEO Jussi Hurmola does not expect intellectual property clashes with Nokia.

However, Nokia has not gifted Jolla any patents or other intellectual property for

development of Jolla's smartphone; as a result, Jolla does not hold such rights. Jolla has no

plans to support theNokia N9 in the course of its core activities as this phone is a Nokia -

not a Jolla - product.

Corporate affairs
Strategy
On 6 July 2012, Jolla declared that with international private investors and partners, it is

todesign, develop and sell new smartphones based on a Linux system and a new user

interface developed by Jolla. The Sailfish OS will be "based on MeeGo operating system, with

the MerProject core", so containing the OS kernel core of [[Mer (operating system)|

Mer]] (which is a MeeGo fork and a core OS distro aimed at vendors like Jolla), with a [[Qt

(framework)|Qt]], QML and HTML5. The Jolla team consists of a substantial number of ex-

Nokia core engineers and directors, and it is aggressively hiring top MeeGo talent to

contribute to the new smartphone development and production.

It is clear that Jolla phones need third-party support, applications and an ecosystem. Hence

Jolla will launch an online app store featuring MeeGo software to back up the release of its

first smartphone later in 2012. Jussi Hurmola pointed out that a version of Angry Birds is

already available for MeeGo devices. is

used, (a meritocracy-governed and managed successor of the MeeGo OS, but without its own

Graphical User Interface and without system kernel), an in-house user

interface, HTML5, QML and Qt. Jolla continues to use the MeeGo

API (via the Mer core), which consists of:
* Qt 4.7 [Qt47]
* Qt Mobility 1.0 [QtMob]
* OpenGL ES 2.0 [OGLES]

However updated version, like Qt 5.0 are or will be used in Mer, eventually.

Mer's primary customers are not end-users, but "vendors", which include device vendors, hardware

adopters and community distributions. Mer provides a mobile device oriented architecture,

structure, processes and tools to make life easy for these vendors. The core is based upon the

work from the MeeGo project. The current Mer

(name comes from "MeeGo Reconstructed", although at first it was based on Maemo) was created

after the discussion about new directions for the MeeGo project, approaching it from the angle

of reconstructing the project from bottom up in order to reignite the project and fix problems

with project management, governance, lack of transparency, direction and flexibility by the community as a fork of the MeeGo

project. The Mer project contains only libraries of core OS, but no user interface.

Ecosystem
Incubation period
Considering Jolla declarations about system, building MeeGo ecosystem and launching an online

MeeGo software store to back up smartphone it is probable and expected that Jolla's smartphone

will be using MeeGo compatible software, however it is not stated finally yet.

Jolla asked about "support of the same QML components, paths, folders etc. than Nokia did for

N9, so developers can repackage apps ease", has answered that "use of QML including Harmattan

components is encouraged", but "the details of the SDK will be shown later".

To provide large number of applications from the start Sailfish OS it has been claimed Jolla

will use Application Compatibility Layer which will enable to

use Android software and brings an entire app ecosystem to the device. Because it leverages the

Android runtime environment and the Dalvik VM, it runs every app just as it would run on an

Android device. This delivers native performance as all Android apps perform as native on the

operating system with zero latencies, without draining of device resources, so system

performance and memory will be unchanged. No app modification by developers would be needed.

This can establish from the beginning a vibrant ecosystem with more than 450,000 apps ready to

use for Jolla's customers. On 2012-

08-21 the Jolla PR caused corrections to the source article regarding the ACL-technology, by

saying author that the use of that technology is currently pure speculation and the company will

disclose their strategy in this area later this year, however the idea as such was not negated and many other technologies can be

considered. "We are looking into many different options to enhance our application ecosystem

story, and MeeGo as an emerging platform is of course going to look at all cross platform

options. There are many different vendors and cross platform technologies in the open to provide

cross platform functionality across basically all the existing ecosystems," she said. "We are

happy to work with all these companies and communities to extend the reach of MeeGo, but we are

not ready to single out any of these technologies or companies."

With use of Tizmee for MeeGo Jolla's smartphone could have possibility to run Tizen software

also as native software.

Demonstration in Helsinki
Jolla unveiled Sailfish OS and its first device (prototype) at Slush, an event for start-

ups, by Marc Dillon and the Jolla crew on the 21st of November in Helsinki, Finland. The

presentation was streamed live worldwide via the Jolla.com website which was also launched that

day. The Sailfish UI was presented on the 21st, and the Sailfish SDK was presented on the 22nd

.

The Sailfish user interface, Sailfish operating system and Sailfish [[software

development kit]] were all launched at Slush. Sailfish OS is the first fully MeeGo-based mobile

OS, as MeeGo/Harmattan (used on the Nokia N9) was a fusion of MeeGo and Maemo.

The ecosystem has been declared to be "open ecosystem where everybody can contribute" with

strategy for different devices, different UIs, different devices, different standards and

different technologies, different business models and different partnerships.
The Sailfish OS SDK has bee announced. The Sailfish OS details info

are accessible via https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Main_Page.

The Sailfish OS SDK use Qt with virtual box for

development, compiling and emulation purposes. It supports many systems like

Android, Linux, iOS or Windows. The open source nature of SDK allow to shape and rebuild it for

particular and specific needs of a company or an organisation or a group of developers, what

allow to create context specific environment.

Peter Oaklander, Senior Vice President for Sales & Marketing of ST- Ericsson said: "We are

pleased to add Sailfish OS to the mobile operating systems supported on our NovaThor ModAp
platforms. Supporting Sailfish from its inception shows how flexibly ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor

platforms can adapt to different mobile OS’es and we look forward to seeing Sailfish powered

devices in the market"

The significant part of presentation was devoted to China, which was the only one country

mentioned, however Jolla operates worldwide. For Jolla strategy China is the core opportunity as

a cyberport for development innovations and a marketplace.

During the presentation Jolla's sailfish smartphones were declared to be sold not only with

Jolla brand. But Jolla phones are to be offered to retailers, to operators and to other

smartphone vendors to be sold under partner's brand. This will allow to use partner's existing

customer base.

Ubuntu, Sailfish and Plasma Active cooperation for sharing common APIs
Teams of Canonical Ltd., Jolla and KDE are talking about using common Application

Programming Interfaces (APIs) in their work on user interface (UI) design.

Sailfish and Plasma Active workspace use Qt 5′s QML – a JavaScript-based language for the

design of UI applications. The resulting interface elements are similar, but are not currently

compatible with each other.

Both teams are working with KDE towards a common architecture, preventing further fragmentation

of mobile Linux. This could eventually allow these three systems to share HTML5 apps.

The idea of cooperation idea to have common APIs has born in a chat on KDE’s #active IRC

channel, and it can have a huge influence on the future of all three projects.

Zoltán Balogh, developer at Canonical, confirmed that the discussion about APIs was underway,

and invited anyone interested in QML to participate. “Clearly a productive collaboration between

communities and companies would be something revolutionary,” he wrote.

The proposed cooperation attempts to not only simplify UI development, but establish long-term

links between Canonical, Jolla and KDE staff including "other aspects of the bigger puzzle such

as common package formats and delivery strategies,” wrote Aaron Seigo from KDE on his blog.

This can lead to the situation when a single app could work and look native on both [[Ubuntu

(operating system)|Ubuntu]] and Sailfish mobile operating systems, as well as Linux

distributions using Plasma Active. This would attract more developers to the platforms and

support the ecosystem, resulting in more apps and better effects for developers due to bigger

markets.

Hardware
Jolla hardware will be announced in Q1 2013 and release should happen before summer. Design of

the phone will come directly from Jolla. Jolla's first smartphone is to have a screen bigger

than 3.5 inches.

Jolla's Sailfish OS works in a tablet

too. About tablet in

November 2012 it was said that we could see Sailfish tablet, but Jolla itself will on this first

wave concentrate on a smartphone.

The Sailfish OS can be used for many kinds of hardware devices like mobiles, computers,

notebooks, navigations, smart TV, cars and IVI, yachts and boats,

household devices of many kinds, other forms of consumer electronics

etc. - this is similar

situation as with MeeGo.

As Jolla's Sailfish OS use the Mer core distribution then it can be used with various hardware,

like ARM or Intel and many others. It is possible because the Mer core distro does not contain

neither a kernel nor UI, but libraries above kernel and

below UI layers. To make a working Linux distribution a specific kernel

compatible with a particular hardware and a UI (like Joola UI in Sailfish)

are to be added - this creates the distribution of Linux MeeGo Sailfish OS for particular

hardware. Also this allows Sailfish OS with appropriate kernel to work on every hardware.

Because of open source basis and rules it can be used by all interested in using of those

solutions e.g. to adopt for a particular hardware or any special needs.

Hardware components are widely adapted on Sailfish and this should make it possible to bring

very strong hardware.<ref>http://nokiagadgets.com/2012/11/25/jolla-phone-will-be-priced-as-a-

February 2011.<ref>{{cite web|last=Zieler|first=Chris|title=Nokia CEO Stephen Elop rallies
