History
In July 2011, Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen created Monstercat as a YouTube channel. Monstercat served as a medium for Darlington and Paunonen's friends to share and promote music. Darlington and Paunonen created compilation albums to provide new artists with a method of releasing their music and attempt to lessen the competitiveness between the artists. The first song on the label was Dubstep Killed Rock 'n' Roll by Ephixa on Monstercat's first album, "Launch Week", which features seven artists: Feint, Halo Nova (Now Varien), Stephen Walking, Ephixa, Neilio, Arion, and Going Quantum. Recent albums now feature upwards of 30 artists with an even larger variety of generes. Five of the artists on the album were close friends with Darlington and Paunonen.
In December 2011, Monstercat signed Krewella, an American electronic dance music group from Chicago, Illinois, "Killin' it", their first and only single released by the label. Monstercat promoted Krewella with social media campaigns and partnered with EDM YouTube channels for a larger platform.
After Krewella was signed, Monstercat gained popularity and quickly gained subscribers.
#OperationDethrone
Monstercat's compilation album 007 Solace reached #1 in the iTunes EDM charts and #9 in the dance charts, sparking their popularity and giving them the #1 position for their next albums to come. When Monstercat's next album, 008 Anniversary (named in honor of the 1-year anniversary of the label) came along, they set up #OperationDethrone, a challenge to see if they could climb over the artists that had "held the iTunes EDM Albums for as long as [they could] remember," those artists being Skrillex, Guetta, Knife Party, Deadmau5, and Tiësto.
The album became so popular that it was marked as urgent to be moved to the iTunes dance charts. Once moved, it had surpassed albums from Adele, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, John Mayer, Katy Perry, and other well-renown artists at the time.
