Im Herzogthum Schleswig, in der Landschaft Angeln,
leben noch Leute, die sich erinnern, nachstehende
Erzählung aus dem Munde des vor einiger Zeit verstorbenen,
durch mehrere gelehrte Arbeiten bekannten Pastor
Oest gehört zn haben; nur weiß man nicht, ob die Sache
ihm selbst, oder einem benachbarten Prediger begegnet
sey. Mitten im 18. Jahrhundert geschah es, daß der
neue Prediger die Markung seines Kirchsprengels umritt,
um sich mit seinen Verhältnissen genau bekannt zu machen.
In einer entlegenen Gegend stehet ein einsamer
Bauernhof, der Weg führt hart am Vorhof der Wohnung
vorbei. Auf der Bank sitzt ein Greis mit schneeweißem
Haar und weint bitterlich. Der Pfarrer wünscht
ihm guten Abend und fragt: was ihm fehle? „Ach,
gibt der Alte Antwort, mein Vater hat mich so geschlagen.“
Befremdet bindet der Prediger sein Pferd an und
tritt ins Haus, da begegnet ihm auf der Flur ein Alter,
noch viel greiser als der erste, von erzürnter Gebärde und
in heftiger Bewegung. Der Prediger spricht ihn freundlich
an und fragt nach der Ursache des Zürnens. Der
Greis spricht: „ei, der Junge hat meinen Vater fallen
lassen!“ Damit öffnet er die Stubenthüre, der Pfarrer
verstummt vor Erstaunen und sieht einen vor Alter ganz
zusammengedrückten, aber noch rührigen Greis im Lehnstuhl
hinterm Ofen sitzen.
