Difference between revisions 11033878 and 11037173 on enwiki == automatic gfdl of uploaded files == Hey Neutrality, you marked some of my images as GFDL even though I uploaded the images under a CC BY-SA license. (see :Image:Mount mansfield 20040926.jpg for an example.) I reverted your addition of the GFDL license which you then reverted stating that, "all contribs to WP automatically released under the GFDL". I can certainly understand where you are coming from, the upload file page says: "By uploading a file to which you hold the copyright, you agree to licence it under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License." However, from language elsewhere, I had assumed that if I specified another specific license that is "wikipedia compatible", that the GFDL would not apply. For example, on the upload file page under the guidelines it says: "Specify the licence of the file, adding the tags GFDL for GNU FDL, PD for public domain, etc. See Image copyright tags for more of these." If all files were automatically under the GFDL, why isn't it added automatically to all uploaded files? Why is it an optional tag? Also on the Wikipedia:Uploading_images#Licenses page it says: "If the image is licensed under the GFDL, please include "GFDL" in the description. If the image is under any other license please indicate this by using the appropriate message from Image copyright tags." The use of the word "if" makes it sound as if it is an option, not a requirement. Has this been discussed anywhere? I personally have no problem with the GFDL, however, this should be clarified, because I suspect others have made the same assumption as me. Having non-copyright holders adding licenses to other peoples photos etc. seems to lessen its "authority" of "freeness". If it in fact agreed among the community that all uploaded files are under the GFDL, even if an alternative license is specified, perhaps it would be better if the copyright holder was informed that they need to add a GFDL tag or have the file removed if they don't agree. Can I ask why you changed all the date formats in Mary I of England from dd Month yyyy to Month dd, yyyy? This sort of thing really pisses many people off, when they see it as "creeping Americanisation of British articles", and with the use of user preferences it's a totally unnecessary edit anyway, apart from which errors can be introduced - in "Early life" you changed her birthdate from "18 February" to "February 13". Also, I'm curious, why do you feel this shooting is so important? I don't live anywhere near the area it happened - in fact I don't even live in the same country, and I didn't hear about it outside wikipedia. I believe that we should all attempt to reach a general consensus by April 2, 2005 in a set of rules that we can follow. Once we have built a set of guidelines, we can formally create a policy out of those guidelines. We need to define what a specialized topic stub is, how many articles it should cover, when is it appropriate to create it, what defines its need for its creation, what defines its need for deletion, what criteria it should follow, what are the general steps should one take when sorting a stub, whether or not to start using subst: for all templates, whether or not use subst: for all templates created by the meta-templates, and any other matters that may come up in consideration. I thank jag123 for initially creating the subpage for the project at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. Even though they have been discussed, I feel that we really need to confirm everything. For that, we should discuss each issue with its own sections, and raise a list of issues that we need to nail down before really continuing on. The English Wikipedia is nearly at 500k articles. Either the MediaWiki software needs to handle stubs such that they can be found with a simple union of categories, or the sorting is done manually by Wikipedians. Personally, I think the latter is less taxing on the server load, especially when we use subst:, which I think would help the Wikipedia out, performance wise. Please make your comments at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. I apologize for making this somewhat of a spam notice, but since the project has more members, the project can finally decide on these important issues at hand. -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:24, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC) ==Stalingrad Map== Too cool, great work man!
