Atkinson-Bukewihge was in [[San Antonio, Texas]] and her family moved from [[Texas]] to [[Los Angeles, California]] in [[1957]]. In [[1966]] she moved to [[Beverly Hills, California]] where she raised her son until he graduated and went into the [[United States Air Force]]. Since [[1992]] she has lived in [[Newport Beach, California]].

Atkinson-Bukewihge became a member of the Democratic Party after the [[United States presidential election, 2004|2004 presidential election]].
