Developed through over 25 years of research, Triple P offers practical resources for parents, and training and resources for practitioners and organisations in a variety of service settings. <br /> == Introduction about Triple P == Professor Matt Sanders still remembers the hurt and embarrassment on a mother’s face after her 5-year-old son swung a plastic lawn mower at her during a consultation more than 20 years ago. “The child was definitely on track for serious behaviour problems – he threw massive tantrums wouldn’t sleep in bed, taking him shopping was a nightmare and he wouldn’t play independently” said Sanders. “You could see the major impact on the family – the mother was depressed and the parents fought over how best to handle the child. It struck me how many parents were raising their kids in an information vacuum”. And so Triple P – Positive Parenting Program was born... It was after this and many other similar consultations, that Professor Sanders and colleagues from the Parent and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland, began the quest to develop an effective parenting programme, with Triple P eventually given a name in 1992, after decades of rigorous research. There is often a high level of stress involved in parenting with confusion and misinformation coming from every direction. Triple P cuts through that confusion and gives you clear and simple strategies to turn problems around and also to prevent problems from developing in the first place. Imagine being able to spend all that time and energy you usually devote to sorting out kids’ behaviour problems on something enjoyable! Imagine having an organized, orderly family routine with ground rules that everyone knows and follows Imagine being able to balance work and family without constant stress and worry. Imagine being confident that your parenting is giving your kids the best start to life. Once you’ve done Triple P, you’ll be amazed at how much more enjoyable family life can be. == What is Triple P == Triple P suggests simple routines and small changes that can make a big difference to your family. It helps you understand the way your family works and uses the things you already say, think, feel and do in new ways that: Create a stable, supportive and harmonious family Encourage behaviour you like Deal positively, consistently and decisively with problem behaviour Build positive relationships with your children, so that conflict can be resolved Plan ahead to avoid or manage potentially difficult situations Take care of yourself as a parent. While Triple P is almost always successful in improving child behaviour problems, more than half its emphasis is on developing positive attitudes, skills and behaviour. This helps prevent problems arising and fosters family relationships that encourage children to realize their full potential. Triple P has been developed and scientifically proven over 25 years by The University of Queensland Parent and Family Support Centre, with international collaboration (www.pfsc.uq.edu.au). The system is widely in use throughout Australia and increasingly, throughout the world (www.triplep.net). == Founder of Triple P == Matthew Sanders is a Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre at The University of Queensland. He conducts research and has published extensively in the area of parenting, family psychology and the prevention of behavioural and emotional problems in children. He is the founder of the internationally recognised Triple P-Positive Parenting Program, which has won a National Violence Prevention Award from the Commonwealth Heads of Government in Australia and is now run in 16 countries around the world. He has received an International Collaborative Prevention Research Award from the Society for Prevention Research, is a fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and the Academy of Experimental Criminology. He is a Visiting Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester and also the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of Oxford. He has been a consultant to the Council of Europe on Positive Parenting. In 2007 he won the Australian Psychological Society’s Presidents Award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology, and was Queensland of the Year (www.pfsc.uq.edu.au) == Levels of Triple P == The Triple P-Positive Parenting Program is a multilevel, preventively oriented parenting and family support strategy developed by the author and his colleagues at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The program aims to prevent severe behavioral, emotional, and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills, and confidence of parents. It incorporates five levels of intervention on a tiered continuum of increasing strength for parents of preadolescent children from birth to age 12. '''Level 1,''' a universal parent information strategy, provides all interested parents with access to useful information about parenting through a coordinated media and promotional campaign using print and electronic media, as well as user friendly parenting tip sheets and videotapes which demonstrate specific parenting strategies. This level of intervention aims to increase community awareness of parenting resources, receptivity of parents to participating in programs, and to create a sense of optimism by depicting solutions to common behavioral and developmental concerns. '''Level 2''' is a brief, one- to two-session, primary health care intervention providing early anticipatory developmental guidance to parents of children with mild behavior difficulties. '''Level 3''', a four-session intervention, targets children with mild to moderate behavior difficulties and includes active skills training for parents. '''Level 4''' is an intensive eight- to tensession individual or group parent training program for children with more severe behavioral difficulties. '''Level 5''' is an enhanced behavioral family intervention program for families where parenting difficulties are complicated by other sources of family distress (e.g., marital conflict, parental depression, or high levels of stress).
