'''TRTL''' (turtle, trdl, terdle) is a type of [[spray painting]] based in [[Detroit, Michigan]].  People would spray paint a simple turtle design generally on an abandoned building along with ''TRTL'', ''Turtle'', or some other variation of the spelling. Some types of the tagging are like this: On an interstate in Detroit "trtl" drew 3 turtles and wrote "stuck in traffic?" some people think that some of the murals are ok such as the traffic one. But other turtles in detroit are not. When he tagged the [[Detroit Institute of Atrts]] building and the [[DAM]] building people got very mad. The trtl got the media's attention
The media speculated that the taggers were commenting on how slow the city was being restored, but because no one credible ever took credit for creating the tag, it is uncertain what the originator's true intent was.

The movement (suggested by some local art magazines to consist of three males and one female) gained its most notoriety in early 2003 when the [[Detroit Institute of Art]] was tagged.

The president of the museum offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who turned in the person who spray painted the well-kept building.  Many saw it as hypocritical for the president of an art museum to be standing in the way of a new form of art.  Local artist [[Geoff Burgeau]], who at the time had an exhibit hosted by the museum, in turn offered $1,000 to the first person to pie the DIA president.  Burgeau's exhibit was subsequently removed from the museum.

The [[Detroit Free Press]] eventually wrote a story implicating Ronald Scherz in 2004.<ref>http://www.nograffiti.com/grafnews/9_04/turtle_sticks_neck_out.htm</ref> Detroit bridges have ben tagged numerous times too.  Ronald Sherz claimed that it was just a symbol.
