Project Xenocide is an open source game inspired by X-COM the classic game from Microprose (now Atari Entertainment).
Everyone is welcome to contribute to the project by posting in the project's forums, within the Lobby/Recruitment Center.

The goal is to create a game combining two main phases of play: a strategic "planetview" to manage resources and bases on a global scale, and a "battleview" to match player-controlled units against alien soldiers in turn-based combat.

This project is inspired by but does not use any of the code from the original X-COM: UFO Defense, also known as UFO: Enemy Unknown, or any of the sequels, all of which are the sole property of Atari.

Gameplay
The style of Project Xenocide is planned to mimic the first two games in the X-Com series.

Plot Summary
Development
Historically Xenocide was developed utilizing C++ and the platform-independent Ogre 3D graphics engine. In recent months however a new branch based on Microsoft XNA has gained favor among the current developers.

On October 24 a new public Progress Release has been made available. That Progress Release bearing the Minor Number 02 features employee management, Research, Manufacturing, item transfer, illuminated night map and all the different kinds of UFO missions. Additionally many 3D models have been added.

To reduce the size of the download a separate audio pack has been created. This audio pack will only need to be downloaded once.

Preliminary system requirements
* Pentium IV or AMD Athlon 1800 Mhz
* 512 MB RAM
* Windows XP or Vista
* DirectX 9.0c
* .NET Framework 2.0
* XNA Refresh 1.0 Runtime Distribution
* GeForce FX 6200 / ATI Radeon 9500 or comparable, all with recent drivers. (Please don't be shy to try it with older GFX Chips, like the Geforce 5 Series. We have unconfirmed reports of Xenocide working with these Chips as well.)

Project Xenocide is an open source game heavily inspired by X-COM, the classic game series from Microprose (now 2K Games).

Gameplay
The style of Project Xenocide is planned to mimic the first two games in the X-Com series.

The player is in the place of the "Commander of Project Xenocide", a secret organization whose sole purpose is to protect the Earth from the Alien Invasion.

The game combines two main phases of play: a strategic "planetview" (called Planetscape) to manage resources and bases on a planetary scale, and a "battleview" (called Battlescape, under development) to match player-controlled squads against alien soldiers in turn-based combat.

In planetscape, the player will also be able to manufacture items or resources, conduct research on salvaged alien artefacts or new proposals on human technology, equip his soldier squads and aircrafts with armor, weapons and various equipment (like medipacks and different kinds of grenades) and check his funding status.
