Metzger began singing at the age of 4. Besides singing, Matthew loves playing [[basketball]], [[football]], and [[baseball]]. He describes his vocal style as [[pop-rock]]. In May [[2002]] he completed his bachelor's degree in [[marketing]] at [[Miami University]] in [[Oxford, Ohio|Oxford]], [[Ohio]]. Metzger gained fame when he participated in the popular reality television series ''[[American Idol]] '' [[American Idol (Season 3)|(Season 3)]].  He was eliminated from the show during the semi-final competition.

On [[August 23]], [[2004]], Metzger joined the cast of the [[American Broadcasting Company|ABC]] [[soap opera]], ''[[One Life to Live]]'' as Demerest "Duke" Buchanan, son of [[Kevin Buchanan]]. In late March [[2006]], Metzger was let go from the soap after only two years due to storyline purposes.
