(contracted; show full)s enemies attacked and forced him to flee through dense fog to lose them. He appeared in Barovia, whose inhabitants called him "Azalin" upon hearing his name. He was the most powerful and least trusted servant of [[Strahd von Zarovich]] for 40 years, and parted company after a magical escape attempt failed (bringing Mordent into the realm). Azalin then found himself in Darkon, absolute ruler of the realm, haunted by the ghost of his son and completely unable to advance in his mastery of magic.
He declared war to [[Strahd von Zarovich]] under the pretexte that Strahd had mistreated him while he was in Barovia. The two waged the war for many years but neither could claim victory. While Azalin was superior in magics, he had also taught Strahd too much in the arts while under his rule to recover for his lack of the ability to learn new spells. Thus, Strahd had caught the hint and, being the better stratagist in war, used this information to push into stalemate a better adversary buy killing Azalin's best officer's, the leaders of the Kargat.

In the last thirty years, Azalin has tried to escape Ravenloft twice more: the first was in manipulating the Grand Conjunction, which almost tore the Dread Realms apart. He then toiled for ten years in creating his ''doomsday device'', which would turn him into a demilich and allow his immaterial essence to escape.

The second attempt caused the Requiem, killing all life in Il Aluk and shattering Azalin's essence across Darkon. He remained in that state for five years before pulling himself together and taking over the corpse of his son, which had been lying in Castle Avernus for almost two hundred years.
