The origin of the Antlions is unclear.  The kind of sandy environments they inhabit in ''Half-Life 2'' are not encountered in the border world [[Xen (Half-Life)|Xen]] (the origin of the alien species in ''Half-Life'').  However, as mentioned above, during ''Half-Life 2'' a vortigaunt skillfully harvests pheropods from an Antlion Guard, suggesting familiarity and that Antlions possibly are indigenous to Xen.


A so-called "antlion king" was touted in a few previews. It appeared to have a face resembling more of an alien, as it had few insectoid qualities. However, according to Half-Life 2 : Raising the Bar, Gordon was supposed to actually fight one of these in a 'boss battle' underground. However, as the above-ground levels gained more detail and the below ground levels shrank, it was decided that the player would simply not meet the antlion king.⏎
