I tend to think the Fray originated in 1995, not 1998 as stated.
I joined forum in the spring of 1996, and at that point it was thriving.

I'm pretty sure this line has been amended to the point of falsehood: "A controversial re-design during Slate's days as a subscription-based service spawned The Mote, but was ultimately returned to a free service after readership of Slate and participation in the Fray dropped significantly."

I added the archived threads. Yes, they are archived versions of discussions on the site before the redesign. My apologies for not designating them clearly. There are other archives out there, btw.
