This alphabetical list is subject to complications that reflect the variations in naming conventions, especially among names that come from many cultures and historical periods.
* The vast majority of people appear  preceded and followed by the other people who have the same surname ([[family name]]) (or for less frequent surnames, people whose surnames begin with one or more of the same letters).
* Most other people than these differ by having the word 'of' (or one of several non-English-language equivalents) as part of their [[name]]s; each of them instead appears 
** closest to any people who also have 'of' in their names, and the same given name (first name); 
** also among any people whose surname is the same as that given name.
* Letters that closely resemble one of the 26 letters of the English alphabet (such as &Auml;) are treated for purposes of order as if they were the English letter they resemble (in this case A); the letters &eth; and &thorn; are each treated as if it were the pair of letters "th".
* Names that contain a letter not appearing in English (such as &Auml;), and are frequently transliterated with two letters replacing the foreign letter, may appear in this list either spelled with the foreign letter, spelled with the two English letters, or appear twice, once with each of those spellings.  Generally the positions the two spellings of such a name would fall at in this list, according to the principles stated, are widely separated: for instance, if G&ouml;del and Goedel both appeared, they would be separated by Godet, Godfrey and Goedeke.
