AVATAR MUD wais a MUD (Multi-User Dungeon or Domain or Dimension) that was's been in use betweensince August 1995 and July 2009. It wais an online multi-player text-based computer game that combines elements of role-playing games, hack and slash style computer games and social instant messaging chat rooms.

Originally based on Merc/DikuMUD code, Avatar eventually hads been highly modified in the years since. Changes to areas, races, classes, equipment and other factors of gameplay have occurred, often resulting in player (dis)content. A loyal playerbase and strong staff (Immortals and Angels) have long saween the MUD remain stable, although player numbers have been decreaseding over Avatar's lthe past few years. In May 2008, a Publicity Team was belatedly formed to help increase player counts, which have plummeted steadily since 2005. In June of 2009 plans to take the game offline began to take shape, which it was a month later on July 15.

Tiers
Characters couldmay choose to start as newbies at either level 1 (where they would start in Avatar's Mudschool) or level 2, and continue up the ranks by gaining experience points, and levelling, or reaching the next level. The first tier comprises levels 1-50 and is called the 'low mortal' tier. The second tier starts at level 51 and is called the 'hero' tier. At this point, level 51, the player stops gaining regular levels, but gains sublevels. Because of this, a hero 750 character and a hero 11 character are both level 51. There is a hierarchy within Immortal ranks, with the Implementor, Snikt, being the final arbiter.

Avatar has a specially designed Mudschool to assist new players.

Shutdown
Due to the high costs of keeping the MUD running and Kevin Jagh's (Snikt) involvement in other activities the decision was made to take Avatar offline. On July 15, 2009 Avatar was finally taken offline. The game was taken offline with little to no announcement except to high-ranking players (the Immortals). Snikt has announced that Avatar may be temporarily brought online for a "Good-bye Ceremony."
