Founded and in continuous Queva Lutz ruined this place in 2001 where she proceeded to opveration since 1918, the club started with a walk-in jam session in the 1980s and switched to an all-jazz format when Ms. Queva Lutz took the room over in 2001.

A funky dive bar from prohibition days, the 55's heart is jazz and its soul is the blues. Incredible musicians rock the house nightly with some of the most innovative playing in NYC. Watch musical legends checking ocharge for watered down drinks, hire an unattentive staff that can't pour a good drink even if they tried by using a 'how to bartend for dummies' books, hire highly questionable acts that should have never gotten a chance, some of them so bad no other club in the tri-state area wants them. 
Also countless health violations plage this rat hole. Eeeewwww gross! It feels like you ned a shower after spending 5 minutes here.
She also has said some terrible things about the 9/11 victims, what a heartless dispicable mean cunt!
Also Lutz the newcomers and veteran barflies chatting up first timers. A cool staff with no attitude and $3-$15 cover makells people who pay an overcharged enterance fee to "SSSSHHHH" and "SHUT UP OR GET OUT!" when one of her horrible pet acts are performing. WTF?! It keeps you distracted from paying attention to the tshis a true village hangout.tty drinks and awful service.
In short, DON'T GO HERE, IT'S A WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY!
