Herbert was originally graded to 1st ''dan'' black belt in 1989 by [[Sensei]] Pauline Laville Bindra, a rank he later ratified with the [[JKA]] under Enoeda in 1995. Enoeda also graded him to the JKA ranks of 2nd and 3rd 
Dan''dan'' in 1996 and 1999 respectively. Following the death of his mentor, Herbert was graded to 4th Dan''dan'' by JKA chief instructor Sensei [[Massaki Ueki]] in 2003.
