Shades are humans possessed by spirits. They' are similar to sorcerers in that they both use spirits in order to accomplish magical tasks, but thare differencet isn that, while a sorcerer controls the spirits he uses, while a Shade either gives up his mind and body to a spirit, or is overpowered by one and has no control over his actions.  Shades are immensely powerful, and only two beings have ever succeeded in destroying one; an elf and a [[Dragon Rider]].  The only way a sShade can be killed is to be pierced through their heart; otherwise they'it will merely reappear elsewhere and return stronger than before. The only notable sShade in [[Eragon]] is [[Durza]].  ⏎

It is unknown whether there are any other sShades in [[Alagaeësia]] at the time of the book, though Paolini did say that it was possible that another sShade might turn up.  No new Shades were seen{{template:fact}}  No new Shades had appearances in [[Eldest]], though Durza was often discussed.
