The clan takes its name from the ancient [[Gandhara]] kingdom of the [[Mahabharata]] (the modern-day province of [[Kandahar Province|Kandahar]] in [[Afghanistan]]).

In the Indian Classical music system, the third note in an octave is also called Gandhar.
