Shortly afterwards, the coup plotters announced that Allende committed suicide. An official announcement declared that he had committed suicide with an automatic rifle. In his 2004 documentary ''[[Salvador Allende (film)|Salvador Allende]]'', [[Patricio Guzmán]] incorporates a graphic image of Allende's corpse in the position it was found after his death. There was an ongoing controversy over the cause of Allende's death.For years, Chilean left-wing maintained that Allende had been assassinated, considering that a suicide would weaken Allende's figure.
