'''The Spine''' is a mountain range that runs down the West coast of the [[fictional]] world of [[Alagaësia]].  It has only one major pass, along the Toark River, which serves to isolate the coast. Most people in the Empire fear the Spine and the danger it represents, especially since the king lost nearly half his army in it during his campaign against the [[Dragon Riders]].

A few separate events occur within The Spine:
*[[Eragon (character)|Eragon]] finds [[Saphira]]'s egg within the range.
*Galbatorix is ambushed by Urgals and loses two fellow [[Dragon Rider]]s along with his first dragon.
*Eragon and Saphira hide from the [[Ra'zac]] within The Spine. This is the first time that Eragon rides on Saphira, which leads to torturous wounds upon Eragon who had no protection against the hard scales of Saphira.
*[[Brom (Inheritance)|Brom]], Eragon, and Saphira hide in the mountains before they run from [[Carvahall]], during which time Brom and Eragon strike up a traveling arrangement.

==Occupants==

*Urgals make their homes in these mountains along with other monsters.
*Few men venture into these mountains and are able to come back, Eragon is among this small number.
