DIGITAL VILLAGES TODAY
This page will tell about the evolution of Digital Villages. It has been an experience that started in the mid-90's. The first target village was Wirby in the southeastern part of Finland. The project has been helping small businesses, entrepreneurs and organizations take full advantage of Information Technology through research, education, interchange, and collaboration.

In today’s global economy, companies and individuals must continuously improve and innovate - or their products and services become obsolete. In this dynamic environment, information becomes a key source of competitive advantage and technology becomes fundamental to economic growth.

Just like Wikipedia, it has been a journey and a learning experience. The first attempt to write about Digital Villages and Wirby the Global Village in Wikipedia dates back to august 2005; the date this user page was made. The project was standing still for months while the use of Wikipedia was unfamiliar.

The wikipublishing started to move after 14.06.2006 with a better understanding of publisihing and editing of wikipedia pages. The initial concerns were about uploading files, pictures and how to format the outlook of wiki pages. The learning process has since the end of March 2006 moved in the right direction.The break-through happened during this time periode 14.06...21.06.2006. The advice found on Wiki has been very helpful: Syntax is different

New ideas and historical background about the Digital Villages development can be found at Digital Villages. A village is a human residential settlement commonly found in rural areas.

It is usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town or city. Villages have been the normal unit of community living in most areas of the world throughout its history, up until the Industrial revolution and the ongoing process of urbanization.

::VILLAGES IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Some villages provided their own police and other optional services. Villages have less autonomy than municipalities and cities. There was a local police in Ruotsinkylä until the 1970's. The service infrastructure is however deterioating.

Smaller villages are searching for new ways to survive. The project Digital Villages can be seen as a survival game for the inhabitants in smaller villages looking for new ways to attract younger inhabitants and job providers; entrepreneurs.

Although many types and organizational patterns of village life have existed, the typical village was small, consisting of perhaps 5 to 30 families. Wirby and its surroundings do have about 400 inhabitants. Wirby the global village stands for four participating villages: Virböle, Kungsböle, Finnby and Jokiniemi.

In many states in US, the term "village" is used to refer to a relatively small unincorporated community. This informal usage may be found even in states that have villages as an incorporated municipality, although such usage might be considered incorrect and confusing.

The first step towards micromovies production. For a global service provider the website and a business blog can provide the appearance of being a very large company. There is certainly a future for the distance workers because of the high internal costs of professional staff people, outsourcing work loads and tasks looks very attractive to the corporate bottom line. As a result of the downsizing and outsourcing phenomenon, there has never been a greater opportunity for the independent business person or small companies to claim those service contracts.

The plot of Wirby the Global Village is centered on Wirby, a village in development, the arrival of new business agents who take an undercover developers role in a small southeastern village in order to ferret out the fears of deterioation of a large part of the small villages after Finland joined the European Union.

Specifically, the consultants have been investigating a serial of good examples in Central Europe who have indicated that the window of opportunities isn't closed for all time.

The movie has somewhat been cited as an excuse to show off the introduction of new technology to the villages scene.

Several key experts from industry and research institutions will be invited to this workshop to share their views and visions.

::What Digital Villages is all about

Finally, the page formatting is improving. In the initial stage Wikipedia is a learning process.The wikiexpert support has been useful. There is much more to learn. But this is a good start. The road to a deeper understanding and usage of Wikipedia seems to open up.

The Digital Villages idea evolution has a much longer history. I remember travelling this kind of country in the United States. The picture found on wiki represents an example of how visual elements can be taken into this content.

Figuring out this is a part of the global collaboration and learning process. Needed to learn more about Digital Rights and the pictures usage. But this might function as an example that is valid for this very moment.

* Voinko lisätä tähän kuvia?
* Miten kuvien lisäys tapahtuu?
* Digitla Villages aluekartan lisäys ei ottanut onnistuaakseen (elokuussa 2005).

Mutta tämä France Expo 1967 liimautui sivuille pienellä vaivalla. Olen saanut aikaiseksi metodin, joka mahdollistaa aivan uudentyyppisen tietosisällön rakentamisen.

Olemme nostamassa Wirby The Global Village Podcasting Studion sosiaalisen vuorovaiktuksen välineeksi. Viirilän nettiradio avataan ennen joulua ja sisällön tuotannosta vastaa Marjut Ståhls. Hänelle valmistuu Viirilän Alakylään ulkorakennuksen yhteyteen studio, josta käsin äänitiedotteet välitetään maailmalle kultavaksemme.

Kirjoittaminen minä-muodossa oli alkuun hankalaa. Olen tottunut häivyttämään itseni jutuista, koska kirjoitan niin paljon muiden asioista. Olen kuitenkin tottunut minään.

It's a fact of modern world business, both large and small, that service and professional jobs once held within the company are being sub-contracted elsewhere. Often, businesses discover their sub-contractors through reading their business blogs. In today's global marketplace, every combination of contracting is becoming possible, as a result of the internet.

Web collaboration technologies are advancing at a rapid pace. As a result, investing in Web collaboration technology has become more confusing for SME owners, managers and IT professionals. There is a growing need to learn more about the business objectives and benefits of adopting Web collaboration solutions.

At the click of a mouse, professional and service work can be completed in one part of the world, and be delivered to another part of the globe in an instant. As bloggers get to know one another, friendships and business ideas are shared, helping one another to achieve greater success. Many bloggers form partnerships and companies.

::WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

The Wikimedia Commons (also called "Commons" or "Wikicommons") is a repository of free content images, sound and other multimedia files. It is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation. Files uploaded to this repository can be used like locally uploaded files on all other projects on the Wikimedia servers, including Wikipedia, Wikibooks and Wikinews.

The project was proposed by Erik Moeller in March 2004 and launched on September 7, 2004. A key motivation behind the setup of a central repository was a desire to reduce duplication of effort across the Wikimedia projects and languages, as the same file had to be uploaded to many different wikis separately before the Commons was created. The technical feature to use any file from the Commons on any Wikimedia project was implemented and enabled in October 2004[1].

Knowledge Management
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT. Knowledge Management is a well-established discipline in organisational frameworks and finds numerous applications in wide areas of work collaboration.

Increased focus on Ambient Intelligence infrastructures and early work on supporting middlelayers for such infrastructures suggests that there is a growing need for identifying KM methodologies and technologies, which can be deployed in Ambient Intelligence applications.

The issues are related to collecting, organizing, storing and retrieving knowledge for use in Ambient Intelligence behaviour e.g.

* context awareness,
* self-configuring devices,
* autonomous scripting,
* etc.

Developing a Common Vocabulary - What is blogging, podcasting, RSS, wikis, and other new media? Who is doing them? Who is reading or listening? The anticipated workshop could start with a review of the terminology, producers, and audiences of these new media.

Blogs in the Business and Marketing Plan - Blogs have changed both the way companies engage with their customers and the way consumers speak to and about the companies that provide them with goods and services. But are blogs for every company?

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their blog projects to the virtual session for group brainstorming in this final session. We will apply what we have learned over the day to help attendees develop a few concepts for their business blog.

! style="background-color:#EEDFCC;" | THE WORKSHOP AS A NEURAL NETWORK
|-
| style="background-color:"#ccffcc";" | Communication in the WORKSHOP can be modelled upon neural networks, which gives rise to several questions:

*How do neural networks learn?

Learning takes place in the brain. Neurons establish stable longterm connections. For example, the word 'mum' is being represented by a certain constellation of neurons.

The more often the word 'mum' is repeated, the more frequently the neurons fire the corresponding impulses and thus strenghthen the tie.

*How do neural networks produce knowledge?

Neural networks produce knowledge by interacting. In the context of these interactions new and more effective connections are formed (emergence).

*How can the model be transferred to the classroom activities?

The teacher should take care that the learners communicate intensely and enter longterm relationships that are related to the subject matter. He has to watch over the collective production of knowledge by the lerners. This is done most easily by small research-projects.

*Which conditions have to be fulfilled so that a neural network consisting of humans functions?

The people involved must have fun while doing their tasks and feel the collective spirit of the work in the sense of contributing to a better world (ethic motivation).

Communication must be fluent: that means, hurdles to communication have to be removed. The easier and quicker the communication, the better.

The 'brain-constructor' (teacher) must know the individual neurons well, so that he can actively promote and enhance their relations and let them interact productively resource-orientation.

The more competent the individual neurons are, the more competent the constructor, the better the 'collective brain' functions.

Therefore it is important, that the learner be taught the necessary basics of behaviour, such as being friendly, reliable, quick etc.

Learning by teaching consists of two components:

# a general anthropological one and
# a subject-related one.

The anthropological basis of LdL is related to the pyramid or hierarchy of needs introduced by Abraham Maslow, which consists, from base to peak, of

# physiological needs,
# safety/security,
# social/love/belonging,
# esteem/self-confidence and
# being/growth through

self-actualization and self-transcendence. Personal growth moves upward through hierarchy, whereas regressive forces tend to push downward.

The act of successful learning, preparation and teaching of others contributes to items 3 through 5 above.

Facing the problems of our world today and in the future, it is essential to mobilize as many intellectual resources as possible, which happens in LdL lessons in a special way.

Democratic skills are promoted through the communication and socialization necessary for this shared discovery and construction of knowledge.

The subject related component (in foreign language teaching) of LdL aims to negate the alleged contradiction between the three main components:

# automatization of speech-related behavior,
# teaching of cognitively internalized contents
# and authentic interaction/communication.

Organization development, according to Richard Beckhard, is defined as:

# a planned effort
# organization-wide
# managed from the top
# to increase organization effectiveness and health
# through planned interventions in the organization's 'processes', using behavioural-science knowledge

(Smith, 1998, p261. Training and Development in Australia.)

According to Warren Bennis, organization development (OD) is a complex strategy intended to change the beliefs, attitudes, values, and structure of organizations so that they can better adapt to new technologies, markets, and challenges.

Warner Burke emphasizes that OD is not just "anything done to better an organization"; it is a particular kind of change process designed to bring about a particular kind of end result. OD involves organizational reflection, system improvement, planning, and self-analysis.

The European Union has a co-operation project with the name eLOGMAR-M. The aim of the eLOGMAR-M project is to gather and co-ordinate activities in the field of IT- and Communication solutions with maritime and logistics applications.

The maritime freight route “Baltic Sea feeder ports – Western Europe hub ports (Hamburg) – Mediterranean ports – Chinese ports” is selected as the subject of investigation and demonstration.

One of the main objectives is devoted to the problems of setting up a collaborative partner pool, which unites organisations from different countries (Germany, U.K., Finland, Greece, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and China) operating within the selected transport route by means of integrating their electronic information resources (databases, information systems, Web-sites and portals) in collaborative work environment.

We have been studying the evolution of the information society, but good food, clean waters, fresh air and a safe society are just as important. We still can't eat the bits and bytes flowing around in the cyberspace.

Research in the IST domain is delivering new technologies, often associated to innovative, evolving business mechanisms and models, needed to enable their safe and profitable exploitation and their fruition from Customers.

Typical characteristics of such new business models are:

* Cooperative approach to research and exploitation of products/services;

* Closer interactions with Customers, to track their needs in order to reflect them in the product/service design process (Virtual Chain Networks, Value Chain);

* Needs of establishing a global presence on the market (SMEs’ clusters, Virtual Industrial Districts)

* Such new business models are however confronted by a number of legal barriers which are still preventing their safe and permanent adoption in current industrial practices as well as society, and which derive from a lack of current legislation on several IST requirements, like:
** rights of the different parties in electronic transactions and virtual partnerships;
** common legislation in the IST domain;
** ownership of knowledge and protection mechanisms for Intellectual property in the global context;
** relationships with intermediaries.

There is therefore the need to identify solutions and recommendations within current framework, accepted at overall European level, and harmonised with respect to the overall research and industry contexts in Information Society.

Audioblogging is a variant on the blogging trend of online self-publishing, using audio to reach the audience instead of text used by traditional blogs. Audioblogs have similar form as blogs, using post-based entries cataloged by time and date.

There is usually a title and brief description, but the bulk of content is in the linked audio file. Usually audioblogs are MP3 format, but occasionally in Ogg Vorbis, AAC, or Macromedia Flash formats.

Many audiobloggers are also text bloggers and use both types of posts on their blogs. It can be claimed that if a blog post contains a linked audio file, the weblog is also technically an audioblog.

The year 2004 was the tipping point for audioblogging. A group of audiobloggers started to unite around the use of RSS enclosures with their audioblog posts and a radio like content format. As media attention grew aroung this new style of audio distribution, a community started to grow. Audioblogs that have come to use RSS are technically known as podcasts.

The Mary and Karla show: Two sexy girls who chat about their lives, love and relatiosn, rap music, creative projects, dish the latest gossip and keep it real. Mary and Karla keep you updated with comedy, movies and television.

Whos is gonna own the consumers eyeballs? That's what interests advertisers. How about with podcasting? It's about owning the ears of your consumers. How to get them listening to your messages.

Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers.

A Podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to download or subscribe. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (see below).

Usually, the podcast features one type of "show" with new episodes either sporadically or at planned intervals such as daily, weekly, etc. Besides that there are podcast networks that feature multiple shows on the same feed.

Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen when they want, where they want, and how they want.

The new wave

Although never a formally organized movement, the New Wave filmmakers were linked by their self-conscious rejection of classical cinematic form and their spirit of youthful iconoclasm. Many also engaged in their work with the social and political upheavals of the era, making their radical experiments with editing, visual style and narrative part of a general break with conservative paradigm.

Some of the most prominent pioneers among the group, including François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol and Jacques Rivette, began as critics for the famous film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. Co-founder and theorist André Bazin was a prominent source of influence for the movement. By means of criticism and editorialization, they laid the groundwork for a surge of concepts which in later decades of film study (originally in the 1970's) was coined as the auteur theory.

* We try to transfer some of the ideas to Micromovies
* The evolution is slow but the roadmap to more micromovies is crystal clear
* One of the ideas is to start podcasting and webcasting from Wirb
* The local podcasting radio station does already have a studio

The movies featured hitherto unprecedented methods of expression, such as seven-minute tracking shots (like the famous traffic jam sequence in Godard's Le weekend). Also, these movies featured existential themes, such as the stressing of the individual and the acceptance of the absurdity of human existence.

Enlarge

Lightweight cameras, lights and sound equipment allowed the New Wave directors to shoot in the streets, rather than in studios. This fluid camera motion became a trademark of the movement, with shots often following characters down the Paris streets.

* We take the Village or the Entrepreneurs as objects and shooting environments

Many of the French New Wave films were produced on extremely small budgets. Often they were shot in a friends' apartment, and used the director's friends as the cast and crew. Directors were also forced to improvise with equipment (for example, using a shopping cart for tracking shots). The cost of film was also a major concern; thus, efforts to save film turned into stylistic innovations: for example, in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, several scenes feature jump cuts, as they were filmed in one long take: parts that didn't work were simply cut right from the middle of the take, a purposeful stylistic decision.

* Micromovies have been produced in the same way with very small budgets

The style had an impact on American movies as well. After Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde (1967) the New Hollywood directors (e.g. Altman, Coppola, De Palma and Scorsese) of the late 1960s/early 1970s made movies inspired by their European (and in particular French) counterparts. The latest American directors who admit a serious influence of the French new wave are Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson.

* The road to staredome is still long
* That might not even be an objective for the villagers

The Learning Process
----

There is currently no method or tool for assessing an organisation’s readiness in a standardised and holistic manner to enter into such an arrangement from the business, organisational, legal, technical, ICT and human points of view.

The main objective of an upcoming workshop is to review and compare an emerging readiness assessment methodology as well as to address the envisaged related mechanisms for improving companies’ capability to enter and perform in Collaborative Enterprise arrangements.

Large Enterprises and Regional centres actually involved in the development of the readiness assessment methodology through their participation at the project ARICON, (financed by the European Commission under the 5th FP Growth) will address:

* the business relevance of supplier/partners’ cooperation capability level
* the major outcomes of first pilot assessment applications
* Large Enterprises, looking for mechanisms aimed at improving the collaboration capabilities of their qualified pools of Suppliers
* Regional Centres’ envisaged services to SMEs, aimed at qualifying and improving the associated companies’ cooperation capabilities
* perspective synergies among Large Enterprise and Regional Centres in implementing cooperation ability assessment and improvement mechanisms.

First steps to understanding Wiki

FUTURE SHOPPING
RFID tags are cheap and small enough to be disposable, and they're getting cheaper and smaller by the day. Retail stores are beginning to use them as glorified bar codes, putting them on cases of bananas or crates of Coke so they can keep track of their inventory.

There is a call to abandon the old rules of marketing and wake up to new opportunites. We need to understand and create our own road map for change, such as major trends that should inspire smart marketers, including the need for 24/7/365 service to customers on their terms--and, through wireless, consumers are always connected and accessible, no matter where they are.

* We see a possibility of Call Center supported talking walls to give additional information to customers in the store

The technology has the potential to transform our relationship to the objects around us. In theory, stores could dispense with checkout counters instead, you'd grab items off the rack or shelves and walk out the door, while an RFID reader takes note of the items and takes the money right out of your e-wallet.

* Service automation, no traditional cash registers needed

Your clothes could tell your washing machine what settings to use. RFID could help give inanimate objects the power to sense, reason, communicate and even act.

* Connecting the objects

Big groceries, department stores and other retailers around the world are asking suppliers to put RFID tags on shipments of goods. Staff will know exactly where items are and when they came in.

* Supply chain management

Customers will never have to leave the store empty-handed because items will never run out—wireless signals will alert staffers to dwindling supplies of diapers or soup. What's more, RFID will help combat theft and counterfeiting, problems that cost businesses $500 billion a year.

* Shelf content management

A variety of false claims have been made about the unsuitability of UHF RFID for item-level tagging.
A webinar will present the truth of the matter, exposing the myths and explaining why the physics of RF propagation make UHF ideally suited to item-level tagging. The presenters will illustrate that UHF Gen2 not only works beautifully for item-level tagging, but also makes the best business sense by enabling a single, worldwide RFID infrastructure.

Shopping Centers and Signage
Collecting information about Shopping Centers and Signage is also a part of the extended verison of Digital Villages that leads us to Tähtitaajamat. Shopping is considered a recreational activity of psychological interest. Shopping involves selection and purchase.

"Window shopping" is an American/English phrase meaning to look into glass windows of a shop for entertainment and imagine purchasing items without actually purchasing, possibly just to pass the time between other activities, or planning a purchase.

n commerce, a Hypermarketis a superstore which combines a Supermarket and a department store. The result is a gigantic retail facility which carries an enormous range of products under one roof, including full lines of fresh groceries and apparel. When they are planned, constructed, and executed correctly, a consumer can ideally satisfy all of their routine weekly shopping needs in one trip to the hypermarket.

The concept was pioneered by the French retail group Carrefour, which opened the first hypermarket in 1962 in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois near Paris. Carrefour is now the second-largest retail group in the world. That same year saw the first Meijer Thrifty Acres hypermarket open in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After the successes of super- and hyper-markets and amid fears that all smaller stores would be forced out of business, France enacted laws that made it more difficult to build hypermarkets and also restricted the amount of economic leverage that hypermarket chains can impose upon their suppliers (the Loi Galland). Large retailers for the most part work around the law by using loopholes. As of 2004, the Loi Galland has become increasingly controversial and there have been calls to amend it.

In France, hypermarkets are generally situated in "commercial zones" (In French: Centre Commecial) outside of cities. They are surrounded by extensive parking lots, and generally by other specialized large stores (for instance, selling clothing, sports gear, automobile items, etc.).

Before I get into this shopping Centers and Signage, I need to learn more about how Wikipedia has been organized and what the goals are. I need to understand the basics, to make sure that I can use it better as tool for various projects.

Jimmy Wales, a 38-year-old computer programmer in St. Petersburg, Fla., is trying to make the entire concept of a printed reference book obsolete. Three years ago he created the Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org), a free online encyclopedia that draws articles not from a sequestered brain trust of academics but from the great unwashed: thousands of Internet users around the world who freely add to and edit the site.

Take a look at the Five Pillars of Wikipedia:Five_pillars.

It's one part reference tool, one part fascinating social experiment. Visitors can create their own entries or change existing ones, contributing their bookish wisdom and, yes, sometimes mistakes or outright misinformation as well.

For Wales, running the rapidly growing reference work has also become an immersive, full-time job. Wikipedia just roared past 1 million total articles (300,000 in English, the rest mostly in 40 other languages), making it the world's largest encyclopedia—three times the size of the 233-year-old Britannica.

INTRODUCTION
Editing a Wikipedia page is simple. Simply click on the "edit this page" tab at the top of a Wikipedia page (or on a section-edit link).

This will bring you to a new page with a text box containing the editable text of the original page. If you just want to experiment, please do so in the sandbox; not here.

You should write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box. You may use shorthand to describe your changes, as described in the legend, and when you have finished, press the Show preview button to see how your changes will look.

You can also see the difference between the page with your edits and the previous version of the page by pressing the Show changes button. If you're satisfied with what you see, be bold and press the Save page button. Your changes will immediately be visible to other Wikipedia users.

You can also click on the "Discussion" tab to see the corresponding talk page, which contains comments about the page from other Wikipedia users. Click on the "+" tab to add a new section, or edit the page in the same way as an article page.

You should remember to sign your messages on talk pages and some special-purpose project pages, but you should not sign edits you make to regular articles. In page histories, the MediaWiki software keeps track of which user makes each change.

There is always a need in the beginning of a project to learn more about how to link to other pages and how to create new pages.The 12.march 2006 teached how to make the links to other pages.

This should be the happy landing picture. It didn't work. What should I do next? Can I use this picture uploaded by myself?

The community portal is the central place to find out what's happening on Wikipedia. Learn what tasks need to be done, and get or post news about recent events or current activities. The community bulletin board below is provided for general announcements, while more specific sections are provided further below for collaborations updates, new featured content, things to do, ongoing projects, etc. See also the Signpost, Wikipedia's internal newspaper, providing a weekly summary of major developments.
