==Early life and education==    
Born into a well educated family in [[Colombo]]. At the age of six, while seeking admission to the prestigious [[Royal College, Colombo]], his admission was denied. As a result, his family filed a violation of fundamental rights petition at the [[Supreme Court of Sri Lanka]] against the [[Government of Sri Lanka]]. Later the judgement was passed in favor of Sanjaya and he was admitted to Royal College.

He is an Associate of [[Chartered Institute of Management Accountants]] and a [[Chartered Global Management Accountant]]. He also holds a certificate in Treasury management and Forex operations from the [[Central Bank of Sri Lanka]] and a diploma in water polo from the Hong Kong Swimming Association.

==Water polo career==
Fernando started playing water polo at the age of 13, later represented [[Sri Lanka]] at the age of 18. ==Coaching career==
Fernando started started coaching from 2005 and has coached water polo teams of Royal College, [[Sri Lanka Air Force]], [[Visakha Vidyalaya]] and the national team.
