==Early life and education==
Axelrod was born in [[Beverly, Massachusetts]], where he lived until his college years. He earned a [[Bachelor of Arts]] from the [[University of Massachusetts Amherst]] in 1965, a [[Master of Arts]] degree from the [[Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars]] in 1966, an M.F.A. from the [[Iowa Writers' Workshop]] in 1967, and his Ph. D. in not-for-profit program design and administration<ref>http://www.creativehappiness.org/faq/</ref> from the onlineUnion Graduate School [[Union Institute]] in 1977.

==Awards and honors==
In honor of his book ANOTHER WAY: Poems Derived from the [[Tao Te Ching]], Axelrod was made a representative of the Wu Dang Temple’s American branch, DaoUSA. From April 2007 through May 2009, he was selected to serve as [[Suffolk County, New York]]'s [[Poet Laureate]].

In the summer of 2009, he received the Hopkins' Society Award for his work with young authors from the [[Gerard Manley Hopkins Society]] at [[Newbridge College]].
