Mehran Assadi is the president and chief executive officer of National Life Group, a position he has held since 2009. He has been a member of the company’s board since 2009. He joined National Life Group in September 2003 as interim Chief Information Officer. On November 13 of 1848, National Life Group was chartered under the name National Life Insurance Company of the United States. Nearly a year later on November 8, 1849, William C. Kittredge was elected as the first president of National Life. On May 17, 1850, National Life faced its first death claim. Rowland Allen died while traveling to California for the Gold Rush. The company did not have sufficient assets to pay the claim. On January 6, 1851, founding member Dr. Julius Yemans Dewey was elected as president of National Life. Dewey was a doctor of medicine, having studied at the University of Vermont. In January 1877 Emma Dimmick became the first woman employed in the Home Office. Since then National Life has made strides to improve conditions for women in the workplace. Artist Roy Heinrich created several illustrations for National Life in which he depicted strong women.  His illustrations were created from 1934 to 1945.  The Historic Art Series was the basis of National Life’s advertising program of the 1930s through the early 1960s. Heinrich’s illustrations of strong women relate to Revolutionary/Colonial times in America. April 11, 1957, National Life purchased the land for its current home in Montpelier, what became its sixth home office. Clearing and excavation began in August and on October 3 President Deane Davis broke ground on the official building site with a bulldozer. After three years the building was complete.<ref>https://www.nationallife.com/public/histarchive/archive_home.asp</ref>  In 2009 National Life Group received Silver Certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Existing Building (LEED-EB) program, sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, the nation's leading non-profit authority for green buildings. National Life is the largest (543,992 s.f.) and oldest (1960) building in Vermont to receive LEED certification of any kind and the second existing commercial building in Vermont to receive a silver LEED-EB certification. Fifteen percent of the campus’ electrical demand is provided by a rooftop solar array and a nearby array of ground-mounted solar panels.
