"First Loser" is a nickname for the second place finisher in auto racing competition.

Implicit in this statement is that winning is all that matters, and second place and the other "Also Rans" are simply laughable.

The quotation "Second Place is the First Loser." was apparently popularized by Dale Earnhardt, and repeated frequently by many other drivers since.
