The school opened its doors in April 2002 to rising 9th and 10th graders. Berry was one of Charlotte-Mecklenburg's largest and most expensive school construction project. It is 310000 sq. ft. and it cost CMS a total of $34,410,000.00. Berry combines traditional high school education and it provides training in three academic technology clusters: Computer Science and Information Technology, Architecture Construction and Engineering Technologies, Medical Science and Biotechnology.
