He died on 28 August 1984 at the age of 83 and he had a military funeral that was attended by President [[Mubarak]]. In the same year, his memoirs were published under the namtitle ''I was a President of Egypt''. The book was reprinted several times and was also translated into English under the title ''The Fate of Egypt''. A station of the [[Cairo Metro]] is named in his honour.
