Periclinal: A botanical term used to describe directionality of structures or processes parallel to a layer of cells. For example, periclinal cell division occurs parallel to an adjacent layer of cells, as opposed to anticlinal cell division, which defines cells dividing perpendicular to the adjacent layer. Also, the periclinal cell wall (in leaf epidermis cells) is the cell wall in the plane of the cell layer, while the anticlinal cell walls are those perpendicular to the plane of the cell layer.
