IXL Learning was founded in 1998 by Paul Mishkin. The company's first product was Quia Web, a website that allowed teachers and learners to create and share customized study materials, and featured [[gamification]] mechanics.

In 2007, the company introduced IXL as a math practice program with math topics at levels ranging from pre-kindergarten to high school, as well as data analysis tools. The program was expanded in 2013 with the addition of English language arts content, and again in 2015 with the addition of science and social studies.
