IXL Learning was founded in 1998 by Paul Mishkin. The company's first product was Quia Web, a website that allowed teachers and learners to create and share customized study materials, and featured [[gamification]] mechanics.

In 2007, the company introduced IXL as a math practice program with math topics at levels ranging from pre-kindergarten to high school, as well as data analysis tools.
