The Karuneegar is a caste in India. They have been listed as an Backward Class in Tamil Nadu.

This caste is prevalent in the Norther Parts of Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh, parts of Karnataka and some remote norther parts of Kerala. While there are more than 7 subcategories, only three of them are well spread. This caste does not contain any noteworthy Nationalists or social reformers. Karunanidhi, in his efforts to divide the Tamilians based on their caste and faith, managed to segregate this community under backward classes in the year 1975 therby removing these people from the core beliefs of Sanatana Dharma.

Only social reformer who can be referred ever is one Sri Ramalinga Swamigal (also referred as Vallalar) who lived in the early 19th Century. Of late, the vibhuti in the forehead of this saint is being masked to move the caste away from Sanatana Dharma.

While the caste never prefers to join armed forces, the ideology and beliefs of most of the caste members would be pro-british and pro-dravidian, which naturally tends them to behave with anti-national mindset

Girls in this caste are normally weak, unattractive. Owing to unhealthy food habits, members of this caste are prone to scabies. Old village saying goes as "all these people are scabied". With strong tendencies to marrying within the close relatives, by and large, the people in this community suffer from various chronic diseases.
