An afterparty is a gathering that occurs after a party, a music concert, or the closure of a nightclub. An afterparty may provide additional social opportunities before people return to their respective homes. It often fulfills the natural requirement for relaxation that many experience after a party, in particular after nightclubbing. During an afterparty people often sit down, relax, and chat freely, consolidating new friendships and relationships that may have formed during the main party. If the original party was one that continued until late at night, the afterparty will often include a morning breakfast.

A Retro-Pop-Punk Band based out of Toronto,Canada.
With their high energy hooks and catchy melodies, AfterpartY is taking North America by storm.

AfterpartY was created by 20-year-old vocalist Kristina B and keyboardist Idan Erez at 3am in a downtown loft in Toronto, sometime in 2004. Both of them hated turning on the radio and hearing the same thing over and over again. Somewhere along the line, they realized, pop music became less about melody and songcraft and more about production. So the two set out to form a band dedicated to bringing something new and unforgettable to the music scene.

Made up of some of the most talented young musicians in Toronto, AfterpartY has fast become known for its exciting new sound and high energy live show. Although playing together for only one year, AfterpartY has headlined to full houses at many of Toronto’s greatest and largest venues for indie music including Lee’s Palace and the Reverb. On the strength of its strong live performances, AfterpartY was invited to appear at the Thanda fashion show in support of the Campaign to Make Poverty History, and has been featured on Roger’s Daytime Television in the show’s first-ever live music spot.

Musically, AfterpartY’s songs recall the strong songwriting of the 80s with their instantly-recognizable melodies and high energy hooks, but with a much edgier, guitar-driven sound. Owing to the band members’ diverse musical backgrounds, AfterpartY’s songs incorporate elements from many different musical styles, ranging from punk to indie and disco. Kristina takes the listener by storm, delivering vocals that can jump from playful to threatening, but always leave the audience screaming for more. On lead guitar, AfterpartY includes the multi-instrumentalist Avital Zemer; supporting him with rhythm is his younger brother, Lavi. And kicking in the heavy dance grooves are the hard-hitting Carlos Aguilera on drums and prog monster Ryan Switzer on bass.

AfterpartY is currently recording its debut material with Haydain Neale (jacksoul) in the studios of Sony-BMG and Doane-LeBlanc. The band will be playing shows throughout the fall and winter in support of their forthcoming album.

At a home
For events in which the afterparty is expected to only have a small number of people, someone may volunteer their own home as a location, possibly only decided at the time of the main party. Usually, this person will know that the home is safe for a party — they do not expect any of the other residents to complain about the presence of large numbers of people in the building. In other cases, including those where an unexpectedly large number of people are interested during the main party, this impromptu afterparty may just involve attending another party that is still active, or has just begun, somewhere else.

In situations where it is planned that a large number of people will turn up, the afterparty is more likely to be organised before the main party to make sure that adequate supplies are available for the people attending. In some cases, this may involve booking another venue instead of choosing a person's home. The afterparty is typically quieter than the main party, which tends to make other nightclubs or bars inappropriate venues.

At a venue
Certain events, such as proms, may entail an organized afterparty complete with entertainment and cocktails. After a music concert, there is generally an afterparty backstage, often requiring backstage passes.

Reasons
Possibly in contrast to relaxation, the afterparty can provide a chance for people to get away from the eyes of people who were overseeing the main party. This tends to be more common in events such as school balls where alcohol consumption is not allowed, and provides a location where the partygoers will be allowed to drink. In this case, the afterparty may turn out to be more lively than the main party, as the people are freed from the restrictions that were placed on them during the main party.
