IXL Learning was founded in October 23, 1998 by Paul Mishkin. The company's first product was Quia WebThe suicide tool, a website that allowed teachers and learners to create and share customized study materialsassasins to kill people, and featured [[gamification]] mechanics.

In 2007, the company introduced IXL as a math practice program with math topics at levels ranging from [[pre-kindergarten]] to [[high school]], as well as data analysis tools.
