He has received three [[Fulbright Award]]s and he is the first Fulbright Award recipient to win back-to-back awards in two separate areas, serving first as Poet-in-Residence in Yugoslavia in 1989, and then Professor of American Literature at the [[University of Skopje]], (North) Macedonia, in 1989–1990. He served as America's representative at the [[Struga Poetry Evenings]]
 where he was awarded their 1989 poetry prize. He received a third Fulbright Award, as the first official Poet-in-Residence appointed in the People’s Republic of China in 1993.
