'''Kountze''' is a city located in [[Hardin County, Texas]].  As of the [[2000]] census, the city had a total population of 2,115.  It is the [[county seat]] of [[Hardin County, Texas|Hardin County]]{{GR|6}}.

Kountze is located at 30°22'36" North, 94°18'55" West (30.376610, -94.315252){{GR|1}}.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of 10.3 [[square kilometer|km²]] (4.0 [[square mile|mi²]]).  10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

== Demographics ==
As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of [[2000]], there are 2,115 people, 747 households, and 537 families residing in the city.  The [[population density]] is 205.7/km² (532.7/mi²).  There are 897 housing units at an average density of 87.2/km² (225.9/mi²).  The racial makeup of the city is 70.59% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 26.43% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.66% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.43% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.09% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.71% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 1.09% from two or more races.  2.84% of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There are 747 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.  The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older.  The median age is 34 years.  For every 100 females there are 96.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,352, and the median income for a family is $34,318. Males have a median income of $30,656 versus $22,083 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city is $13,522.  21.0% of the population and 19.0% of families are below the [[poverty line]].  Out of the total population, 29.8% of those under the age of 18 and 24.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
