Sita, in Hindu mythology is the wife of Rama. She was a foundling, found in a furrow in a ploughed field, and became the adopted daughter of King Janaka. Thus Sita came to be known as Janaki. Because of this birth she is sometimes considered a daughter of Bhumidevi. After marrying Rama, she was kidnapped by King Ravana of the Rakshasas, but rescued by her husband, who then became King of Ayodhya. She has two sons by Rama, called Lava and Kusha.
She may have been named after a goddess Sita, who is mentioned once in the Rigveda as an earth goddess who gives good crops. Her name means "furrow".
The birth place of Sita is "Punaura" located in Sitamarhi district of Bihar state in India. The other names by which Sita is known are Janaki, Vaidehi and Maithili.
The story of her kidnapping and subsequent rescue forms the core of the Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana, written by Valmiki.
