What is Project Xenocide?
Description from the FAQ
Project Xenocide is an open source game inspired on X-COM the classic game from Microprose (now Atari Entertainment).
Xenocide is taking advantage of today's advanced computer capabilities to present the player with professional quality graphics and sound while keeping the gameplay as close to the original as possible. Everyone is welcome to try and contribute to the project by posting in the project's forums, within the Lobby/Recruitment Center.
Historically Xenocide had been a C++ developed game, using the platform-independent Ogre 3D graphics engine, however in the latest months a new branch based on Microsoft XNA has been silently taking over the development team interest because of C# and XNA easiness of implementation and advance capabilities. The goal is to create a game combining two main phases of play: a strategic "planetview" to manage resources and bases on a global scale, and a "battleview" to match player-controlled units against alien soldiers in turn-based combat.
Depending on the country where the original game was released, X-COM: UFO Defense is also known as UFO: Enemy Unknown. There have been several sequels to this game, all of which are the sole property of Atari. This project does not use any of the code from these software titles; it is a completely new program inspired by these titles.
How far along is it in development?
On October 24 a new public Progress Release has been made available. That Progress Release bearing the Minor Number 02 features employee management, Research, Manufacturing, item transfer, illuminated night map and all the differnt kinds of UFO missions. Additionally many 3D models have been added.
Because of the graphical assets size the download is around 14.8 Mb. For convenience a separate Audio Pack has been created that you'll only need to download once.
Preliminary system requirements
