Red Dot design award is an international design competition with over 6,000 entries from 52 countries, and is, along with the iF product design award, one of the most important international product design awards. The competition is divided into three sections - product design, communication design and concept design - which are staged and adjudicated separately. The coveted trophy is the red dot.

Museums
There are two Red Dot Design Museums in the world. One is located in Singapore in Maxwell Road near the URA Gallery. The building is painted red. It formerly housed the Singapore Traffic Police Headquarters. The museum has a special exhibit of local artists and craftsmen every Sunday. These displays offer items for sale. The museum is closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

The other Red Dot Design Museum is in Essen, Germany. It is located in the boiler house of the former coal mine Zeche Zollverein, which is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
