The software attempts to compact and fix the [[Windows registry|registry]]. Such software is controversial among experts and enthusiasts alike as some claim these tools are a necessity while others claim they do more harm than good.{{fact|date=October 2007}}

Some users suggest using a combination of registry "cleaners", the rule of thumb being that no one tool can find or fix all discrepancies in the registry, while others may recommend a product based solely on the combination of so-called errors it finds in one scan, rather than realistically analyzing the severity of the "problems" found.
