Revision 1830192 of "Chengdu_J-10" on enwikiJ-10 (F-10 in West) is a multi-role tactical fighter with a single seat. It is very similar in appearance to the Eurofighter Typhoon. The aircraft is being developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC). Development began in 1988.
This aircraft is a next-generation fighter which is badly needed by the PLAAF. It was originally designed to counter the threat from Soviet built MiG-29s and SU-27s. However, with time it evolved into a multi-role fighter. The design was originally based off the cancelled Israeli Lavi which was in itself based off the F-16. When the Lavi project was ended in Israel, CAC took it over, and it has continued in China as the J-10. Israeli involvement remained as well, with it focusing on the development of avionics. The engine used is a Russian type, similar to the one used in the Su-27.
The J-10 is intended to replace the PLAAFs large fleet of outdated J-6 and J-7 aircraft. The first flight occured in 1996, but after the crash of a prototype, the development was slowed. It is expected that this aircraft will enter PLAAF service by 2007, and will likely be exported to other nations.
