In 2002 he ran unsuccessfully for [[Minnesota Secretary of State]] as the [[Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party|Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party]] candidate against the [[Republican Party of Minnesota|Republican]] [[incumbent]] [[Mary Kiffmeyer]].

Humphrey served as the Minnesota State Director for the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign.
