HydraIRC is an Internet Relay Chat client for Windows, created in June 2002 and developed by Dominic Clifton.
History
Stemming from discontent with other client offerings at the time, Clifton originally coded HydraIRC as an IRC client for personal use. It is loosely based on the design of Bersirc. Due to how quickly it matured into a usable client (less than 6 months from conception), Clifton soon released it to the public. Since then, interest has grown in the client due to its quirky quit messages and grass-roots promotion (users who were asked how they heard about the client often found it through the quit messages).
Development
HydraIRC is coded in C++ and uses the Windows Template Library. Patches are accepted and approved only by Clifton.
The client is released under a non-OSI approved "limited-use source" license. As of January 19, 2009 Clifton has granted svn repository access to everyone without having to register first, this should generate new developer interest in the project so that some often requested improvements can be implemented
Current features
*DCC chat and file transfers
*Supports multiple server connections
*Dockable floating tabbed windows
*Autohiding windows
*DLL plugins
*Channel monitoring
*Message logs
*Event viewer
*Themes
*Color schemes
*Buddy groups
*Audible and visual notifications
*Regular expression highlighting
*Favorites
Future plans
Development of HydraIRC will continue and Clifton will keep fixing bugs and adding more features. He is currently accepting patches submitted by other developers.
Criticism
*Random self-promotional quit messages are used by default when the user disconnects from a server, and can be overridden manually by using the /quit command. This is stated in the FAQ, which explains the quit messages will be non-configurable until version 1.0 has been released.
::e.g. <code>(Quit: HydraIRC -> http://www.hydrairc.com <- 100,000+ downloads can't be wrong)</code>
*Slow development over the last two years.
