In 2007 he won the MAMA ([[Madison Area Music Awards]]) award for "Folk/Americana Album of the Year" for his 2006 album, ''Dusk Came Slow''.  He has played all over Wisconsin, the Midwest, and much of the United States, including cities such as [[Cleveland]], [[Dallas]], [[Kansas City]], [[Chicago]], [[Oklahoma City]], and many more.  John has opened for and shared the stage with performers such as [[Ben Kweller]], [[Jeffrey Foucault]], OM Trio, and has played the [[Wakarusa Festival]] in [[Lawrence, Kansas]].
