UPIN - University of Porto Innovation is the Technology Transfer Office of the University of Porto. Founded in 2004, UPIN is under the supervision of the Rectorate of the University of Porto and is structured in three functional areas to support the innovation chain in the U.Porto. 






Funding for R&D
UPIN is constantly looking for national or European funding programmes that may benefit scientific research, generating talent and increasing the visibility of U.PORTO’s Research, Development and Innovation activities (RDI). It is UPIN’s mission to improve the capacity of U.PORTO and its partner entities to apply to RDI projects funding.
The UPIN’s RDI funding unit also promotes regularly training events and manages the cooperation between the RDI office of each U.PORTO school in terms of activities, having in view to increase the successful participation of the researchers of the University in national and, especially, European funding programmes.

Technology Transfer

The protection and transfer of research results to society is a priority of University of Porto. Technology transfer at UPIN includes the identification of technologies, its protection by patent or copyrights and the development of commercialization strategies, such as marketing and licensing to existing private companies, or the creation of new spin-off companies. Technology transfer represents not only and additional source of revenue to the university but also helps to develop industry-university relations that benefit both parties and promotes economic development. 



Entrepreneurship
University of Porto undertakes continuous efforts to promote technological entrepreneurship, by organizing resources to encourage and provide technical support to entrepreneurs and providing benefits to those who decide to enhance the economic and social knowledge generated within the University.
UPIN supports the creation of academic spin-offs also as a way to transfer technology produced in the University by providing technical support in several areas of expertise, which enables entrepreneurs to develop strategically their ideas in order to create new businesses.

Interface Industry-University
U.Porto believes that the application of the scientific and technological knowledge generated in the University fosters the competitiveness of Companies, thus contributing for the socio-economic development of Portugal.  
Within this context, the Interface Industry-University seeks the multiplication of bridges between Industry and U.Porto.
The Interface works in the promotion, planning, negotiation and execution of research and development (R&D) and innovation projects which may originate mutual benefits both for Organizations and U.Porto.

Intellectual property begins with a creation from the human mind. It is traditionally divided in two major categories:

1)	Copyright, that aims to protect literary, scientific and artistic works;
2)	Industrial property rights, in which inventions (patents), industrial designs and trademarks are protected.
 With the University of Porto’s (U.Porto) Intellectual Property Regulation, approved in 2005, U.Porto aims to increase the protection and valorization of its intellectual property rights, and to allow the recognition of the activity carried out by U.Porto’s academic community members. 
UPIN wants to be recognized by its contribution to the reinforcement of U.Porto’s internal and external image and to its acceptance as an innovative university, due to specialized services that differentiate by the capacity to generate value to the University and to the Community.
