[[BSoD]] is the [[abbreviation]] for 
* [[Black screen of death]] — a failure mode of [[Windows 3.x]] and a system or application error screen in [[OS/2]]
* [[Blue Screen of Death]] — a system error screen in all versions of [[Microsoft Windows]]

The original abbreviation referred to the Windows 3.x failure mode, but over time the system error screens came to be referred to as "screens of death" too.  The [[Jargon File]] suggests that the term was originally an allusion to the "floating head of death" in a popular ''[[The Far Side|Far Side]]'' cartoon.
