The term may have been coined by Puerto Rican artist, Francisco Rivera Rosa, describing his paintings of using coffee. The word comes from a combination of the words art and café. Thus, arfé is a portmanteau. It is sometimes spelled arfe and pronounced like "barf" by its critics. This art is also known as simple as 'Coffee Painting' or 'Coffee Art'.

Other artists Mira Chudasama & Amita Chudasama, Andrew Saur and Angel Sarkela-Saur also paint with coffee staining technique.

California born artist Louis T. Wheeler discovered and refined a highly complex method to the art of Coffee staining since the later part of the 1980's. He then moved to tour Central & Eastern Europe (living temporarily in Italy) durring the early 1990's. A move to Greenpoint, Brooklyn & later to Astoria, Queens, N.Y. was funded by an internship in the later 1990's, helped start Wheeler's research from the aforementioned simpler Arfé coffee paintings, begining his own contemplative research & exploration into a more dense method of staining papers with coffee expressing complex possibilities into what is now called Arfé Contemplativo by the artist Louis T. Wheeler who has resided in Austin, Texas since 2005. Wheeler currently refines his Arfé Contemplativo coffee washes into a more complex art form of staining.
The artist Louis T. Wheeler can be identified under his alias L.T. Wheeler when Curating, touring or exhibiting in "Arfé Contemplativo" related projects.
